Residential Car Charger

There are three levels of car chargers

  • Level 1 is a basic wall plug that all electric cars come equipped to plug into.  These deliver 1kw and about 1% range/per hour of charging for a small car
  • A level 2 car charger is typically the type of car charger installed in houses.  These are 240V and can deliver about 11KW with Tesla model shown here.  These can charge a car overnight.
  • Level 3 chargers are installed in public spaces delivering 50-350KW and can charge a car in under an hour

We install level 2 chargers in houses, we don't supply the charger as there are many different rebates available to customers depending on where they live.  There are two basic configuration for the car charger a hard wired or a plug in version.  Typically if the car charger is going to be mounted external to the house then a hard wired version should be used to minimize plug issues and theft.  For inside garages plug in versions can be used.  It does cost more to install a plug in car charger due to the cost of the high powered plug.  A typical install includes:

  • a permit
  • breaker on the main panel
  • wiring to the plug, the cost per foot is significant so to minimize cost choose a location near the main panel
  • a plug for a plug in car charger or hookup and mounting for a hard wired version

Note:  Due to the large draw of the car charger not all main electrical panels can handle a car charger or have enough breaker space.  This is especially true for houses that are over 30 years old and a panel upgrade may be required.
